The HTC Touch HD in Test - GPS, WiFi, high resolution touch screen
By Keroin on Tuesday, December 23, 2008, in High-tech Gadgets, Software, PDA and GPS, mobile phonesThe new flagship of HTC Korean brand has been available since November in France. After three weeks of intensive use and testing in all genres, here are some impressions on this device that promises to out and already one of the world success of mobile telephony in 2009 after a very honorable career of his predecessors, the Touch Diamond and Touch Pro ...
Here is the Touch HD, large screen of 3.8 inches (larger than the Apple iPhone) and especially a display resolution never seen before with no less than 480 pixels in width to 800 pixels in height ...

Below, for example, our directory pages of The Keroinsite in Opera Mobile 9.5:

With such a display resolution, comfort consultation web pages of course is greatly improved. Even if the TouchFlo 3D interface has not changed much from its predecessors (The Touch Diamond and Touch Pro) are still some improvements to note. A new tab "Exchange" appears to monitor real-time stock quotes and price developments euro-dollar example (not useful for everyone but the service provided by Yahoo can be handy).

As for setting a new option appears to reorganize (hide / move) the tabs of TouchFlo 3D without having to use third party software (like the excellent TF3D config).

Improved also the side of the integrated digital camera that goes 5 megapixels with auto-focus is very effective in daylight or outdoors. The aircraft was not equipped with a flash to save power, photos / videos snuff in dark environments or with electric lighting are generally disappointing to the point of view as though self-focus is Rather good order. On the Weather tab, it has been improved a bit since it now includes, in addition to the usual animations, weather forecast the next 4 days in the same screen.

Apart Skyfire, no mobile web browser makes it even read properly format the flash application also Youtube is still the party to view Youtube videos.

Here's a little comparison to see the size of Touch HD (much smaller and thicker than you think actually) from the HTC Touch Diamond and the HTC Kaiser TYTN2.

As you can see there is much thinner than the Tytn 2 (which has a sliding keyboard) and about as thick as the Diamond.

Now, here's a little 4 minute video gives us a quick overview of the capabilities of the Touch HD Blackstone
The screen is really great, some applications that worked fine with the old familiar patterns from time to time some bugs, here is the list of software I've tested and used properly on the Touch HD:
URL:
- Skyfire: the application does not work beyond a VGA resolution (480 * 640) so if you want to use this browser it will use the small software WVGAFIX3 for changing the resolution of your screen and operate some applications not yet updated to run on the Touch HD.

- Spb Wireless Monitor: application to track exactly how much "datas" used by your camera for different types of connection (WiFi, 3G, USB, ...) and application that uses these "datas" (Youtube, Opera, Activesync, ...). It is also possible to configure alerts for those who do not have an unlimited data plan and want to monitor their consumption.
Multimedia:
- CorePlayer: audio and video player that can play all video and audio formats (mpg, avi, mp3, ogg, mov, ...)
System:
- Batti: utility displays the battery status as a gauge of 2 pixel wide at the top of the screen (to track more precisely the state of your battery).
- Diamond TF3D Config: Utility to modify certain elements of the TouchFlo 3D interface as the subject, the position of the tabs, ...
- Sprite Backup Version 6.5.4 Build 2: Backup complete device (documents, settings, registry, ...). Sprite Backup allows you to schedule automatic backups (weekly for example).
- Thumbcal v1.25: Application for alternatives to the calendar and task manager for Windows Mobile with an interface much more "Touch Friendly".
- G-Alarm V.0.9.8.3: Manager alarm / clock / alarm consistent with the light sensor and accelerometer integrated Touch HD (we can return the device to stop an alarm for example). Ability to associate MP3 alarm to wake to music. The best management application alarm to my knowledge.
- AppToDate: Application to automatically check for updates of certain software (G-Alarm, SKTools, Batti, ...).

- S2U2: Application allowing to lock your Pocket PC like a Iphone.
- MyMobiler: utility to control your Pocket PC from your computer (screen capture, screencast, ...)
GPS:
- TomTom Version 7910 (9185) with map v675.1409 Western Europe: The world leader in GPS navigation software.

- Efficasoft GPS Utility for Pocket PC V.3.1.1: GPS Utility sympathetic containing, among other things, a speedometer (with customizable alarm) to get your speed by GPS. The software also allows navigation if you add your own maps (for a hike in the mountains for example).

- Google Map Mobile: The utility of Google Map, can use your GPS and now available with the option Streetview.

Find us on our forum in the section dedicated to the Smartphones / Pocket PC if you have any questions about this software (or other ...). So much for this small review of the HTC Touch HD Blackstone who happens to be one of the best smartphones (if not THE best) of the end of 2008 or early 2009.
Enjoy with HTC - Touch HD T8282 - Blackstone ![]()
