The Social Bookmarking according Delicious
By Keroin Sunday, 06 August 2006 in Internet and Web services, Social NetworksThis phenomenon tends to take more and more importance in recent times on the Internet is what is called "Social Bookmarking". The purpose of this article is to provide an introduction to this new concept in France but is already an important place in the surfing habits of Internet users Anglo-Saxon. We will more precisely our attention to service Delicious (http://del.icio.us) is currently the busiest and, in my opinion, the most convenient sites offering this service ...
The concept of "social bookmarking" (sharing of favorite Internet) are about 3 years since the United States and made his way slowly to appear in our récement Francophone countries.
What does this concept?
It is about to share with other surfers favorite Internet, meaning that they have the opportunity to have access to what you find interesting on the Internet. In return, you of course also have access to all the favorites of other users.
What is the difference between this and what can bring me a search engine like Google or Yahoo?
A search engine like Google and Yahoo (to name only the best known) will offer web pages in connection with an application that you have proposed.
In principle, a service like Delicious, works the same way as a search engine like Google, you can enter a search, or select a tag (a keyword) that does not even Google. In response, all sites related to your query are displayed.
But then, what is the difference between Google and Delicious?
Well, the fundamental difference lies in the fact that the result of a search under Delicious favorites come from someone else (someone who has chosen to "bookmark" this link because he has found relevant) then Google chosen as the result of queries in an automated fashion.
In fact, Google will scan the Internet with relevant criteria contained in an "algorithm" that is the only one to know. So that is pushing the development of this algorithm, the fact remains that it is an automaton that responds positively to certain criteria to include a page in its results more or less visible (more or less close first results on Google).
Over time, we realize, despite the constant work to improve Google's algorithm, that more and more irrelevant results (or not relevant at all) is hoisted in the top positions on Google in a loss time searching for the user. These results are generally irrelevant due to a better understanding of how to operate by the Google webmaster who know (more or less) how to ensure that their web page appears in the first results without the latter is very relevant compared to the search query.
I do not understand this explanation?
Well to summarize, a search engine like Google is a machine while for Delicious, there is a "human" intervention in the choice of outcome ...
Now, see how it works:
For this, the easiest way is to refer to this document format. Pdf (click here to download Adobe Reader if it is not already installed on your computer that you will read this document).
This document explains how to create your account on Delicious, how to add your favorites and share them, how to search.
Namely, it is not necessary to be registered with Delicious to see the favorites of others.
For Firefox users, there is an extension Delicious (plugin adding options to the browser) that lets you integrate Delicious directly into your browser).
The main current flat is that the entire site is in English. Moreover, the tool is not widely known in Francophone countries (but I think this is a matter of time), almost all bookmarks available (99%) are in English. Nonetheless, even less English the service can be very useful because the "social bookmarking" is not the only function of a service like Delicious.
Indeed, to use everyday, whether you're a mobile user (ie you surf on several different computers during the day) and want to always have your favorites on hand, just http://del.icio.us/ enter your address as login and you have direct access to your favorites.
